Amethyst is a purple violet type of quartz. It is one of the most often used stone in jewelry. The name Amethyst comes from the ancient Greek word "methystos" which means in toxicated as it was believed that the possession of this stone protected one from drunkeness. It is the birthstone for the month of February. It has a hardness of 7 on the mohs scale. It can be found from a light pink to dark purple tint. Amethyst is mainly mined in Brazil where it is found in large geodes and in Zambia, Africa. Smaller deposits can be found in the United States as well as different locations in Canada.
